Two works with 88,000 sales between them, and neither will let you hear a second of it first

Five works have gone through the measurement here so far. Two of them could not be measured at all, for the same reason: there is nothing free to listen to.

That is not a complaint about the circles. It is a purchasing problem, and it is a bigger one for you than for a Japanese buyer, because you cannot read the reviews that would otherwise fill the gap.

Two different free things, and people conflate them

DLsite offers two separate ways to try before buying, and a work can have one, both, or neither.

A streaming sample plays in the product page. Easy to miss, because the control is not obvious if you cannot read the page.

A trial download is a zip file from the shop that you unpack yourself. Completely separate feature, listed elsewhere on the page, and frequently present on works that have no streaming player at all.

This matters because "there is no play button" does not mean "there is nothing". I got this wrong myself, wrote it down, published it, and had to correct it. Scroll for the trial before concluding a work gives you nothing.

For a Japanese buyer that is survivable, because 110 people have written reviews they can read. For you it means paying ¥1,320 on the strength of a tag list and a cover.

Same situation, from a completely different circle and seven years earlier. 18,349 copies, nothing free attached.

Note that its stablemate does have a trial. So this is not a house policy, it is per-work, which means you have to check every time rather than learning which circles are safe.

What their absence actually costs you

Concretely, three things you cannot check:

You cannot judge the voice. Tastes in this are narrow and specific, and a voice that works for fourteen thousand Japanese buyers may still be wrong for you.

You cannot judge the recording. Binaural work varies enormously in quality and there is no way to tell from a description whether the placement is any good.

And you cannot get a language rating from this site, because there is nothing for the measurement to run on. Those works sit at Not rated yet permanently, and that will not change no matter how long you wait.

The first two apply to Japanese buyers as well. The third one is yours alone.

The only sensible adjustment

Pay less for them. Not as a principle, as arithmetic.

A work with a trial lets you eliminate most of the risk before spending anything. A work without one does not, so the same price buys you a worse deal. The ¥1,320 maid work is not overpriced for what it is, but it is overpriced relative to a ¥1,320 work you can audition, and Japanese shops discount so constantly that waiting costs you nothing.

Both of the works above were sitting at 20% and 30% off when I checked, incidentally. Neither discount was a limited event.

How to check in ten seconds without reading Japanese

On the product page, look down the right-hand side for a button below the cart button. If a trial exists, it sits there. The word is 体験版, and if you cannot read it, the shape is distinctive enough once you have seen it once.

If it is not there, and there is no player in the page body, the work has nothing and you are buying blind.

I keep meaning to build a list of which circles reliably provide trials and which never do. Five works in, I do not have enough to say anything useful about it yet.
