A third of it is speech, and even that third is mostly not words

A third of the runtime is sound at all. Inside that third, the words arrive at 114 a minute, against the 300 to 400 of someone simply talking.

That is what came back when I put this one through the measurement, and it is the first work on this site to land in Barely any. Everything else measured so far sits at 200 or more. If you have been waiting for the thing this site claims to find, this is what it looks like when it actually turns up.

The first minute will mislead you

Here is the odd part, and I only noticed it because the transcript is sitting in front of me.

The trial opens with small talk. She has bought a hamburger, she is making coffee, she was drinking at a bar and missed the last train. Ordinary conversation, at ordinary speed, in Japanese. If you played the first sixty seconds and stopped, you would conclude this work is wall-to-wall dialogue and give up on it.

Then it drops away, and across twelve and a half minutes only 33% of the runtime is speech at all.

So the usual advice on this site, sample the opening and judge the ratio, would have given you the wrong answer here. Which is a slightly annoying thing to discover about your own advice. The measurement catches it because it looks at the whole trial rather than the first impression; a person skimming does not.

The rating is worth something on this one

4.78, and the number that matters is next to it: 13,952 people rated it.

I spend a lot of this site telling you to ignore star ratings, because most of them are four or five people. Fourteen thousand is a different object. That is a real distribution and it is not going to move.

124 of those wrote something. Roughly one in a hundred, which in my experience means it did what the title said and there was nothing left to argue about.

What it costs, and the thing about Japanese sale prices

List is ¥385. When I checked it was running at 50% off.

Do not read that as a limited-time event. Japanese doujin shops discount more or less permanently, on rotation, and this one has been out since June 2020. If it is not half price today it will be soon. At ¥385 it is already trivially cheap; at half that it costs less than a coffee, which is a comparison I am making deliberately, given how the trial starts.

Who should not bother

• Anyone who wants a story. There is a setup and then there is not much plot.
• Anyone who dislikes the succubus framing. It is not incidental, it is the whole premise.
• Anyone listening on laptop speakers. This is close-mic binaural work aimed at one ear at a time. Without headphones you are buying the least interesting third of it.
• Anyone who was hoping "barely any Japanese" means "no Japanese". The opening is conversation, and you will miss what it is about.

That third one is the real filter and it applies to most of this catalogue, not just this work.

The other cheap one, pulling in the opposite direction

Worth putting these side by side, because they cost about the same and demand completely different things from you.

¥55, 57,595 copies, 17,152 ratings. And 233 characters per speech-minute, which is where it stops being comparable. This is a female instructor talking continuously through a driving lesson, and the words are the work. Without Japanese you have a pleasant voice and no idea why anything is happening.

Two works, both under ¥400, both with tens of thousands of buyers, and one of them is usable without the language while the other is close to pointless. That distinction is invisible on the product pages and it is not in any tag. It only shows up if someone measures it.

There is a caveat on the driving school one, though. Its trial is 93 seconds long, against twelve and a half minutes for the succubus work, so I am reading a lot into a small sample. The method page has the numbers and the limits.

Something I have not worked out

The measurement tells me how much speech there is. It does not tell me whether the speech matters.

An instruction-led work can run at 250 characters a minute and still be perfectly followable without the language, because the situation explains itself. A quiet work can put its one important line at minute nine. I have no way to catch either from the outside, and I am not sure there is one that does not involve actually understanding the script.

For now the number does the coarse sort, and I say so when I think it is misleading. That is not a satisfying place to leave it, but it is where I am.
